• I'm new to surf fishing — where should I start?
  Start with the beach itself, not the tackle. Our guide to reading beaches shows you how to spot gutters, holes, banks and runouts from the dune before you wet a line, usually on a low tide when the structure is exposed. From there, move to the tide timing article, then pick one simple rig — a paternoster or a running sinker — and learn it properly. Most beginner blanks come from casting into flat, featureless water rather than from the wrong reel.
• Do the rules and bag limits here apply everywhere in Australia?
  No. Recreational fishing rules, licence requirements, size and bag limits, closed seasons and rock fishing lifejacket laws are all set state by state, and they change. Our state pages explain how each system works and what to look for, but always check the current rules with the relevant state fisheries authority before you fish, and note any local sanctuary zones or beach access restrictions.
• What conditions make a beach worth fishing?
  Look for moving water and defined structure: a gutter with a clean entry, a bank that holds a wave, or a runout draining the beach on a dropping tide. Moderate swell that stirs the wash without blowing out the gutter is usually ideal, and the last of the flood through the top of the tide is a reliable window, especially around dawn, dusk and after dark. Big, disorganised surf, thick weed or dead-flat glassy water are all signs to move along the sand.
