What you will find here

This is the full topic index for Beach Fishing Australia. Everything we publish sits under one of the five groups below, so you can move from the basics of reading a beach through to planning a trip on a remote stretch of coast. Our writing is based in Sydney, but the principles travel well from the Sunshine Coast to the Great Australian Bight.

Reading beaches and conditions

The single biggest lift in your catch rate comes from choosing where to stand. Topics in this group cover gutters, holes, rips, sand banks, cusps and the way a beach reshapes after a swell event.

Rigs, gear and technique

Practical, repeatable setups rather than tackle-shop wish lists. We explain why a rig works, then how to tie and fish it.

  1. Paternoster and double-dropper rigs for whiting, bream and dart in shallow gutters.
  2. Running sinker rigs for tailor, salmon and mulloway where a fish needs to move off with the bait.
  3. Wire and heavy-mono traces for toothy species, kept as light as conditions allow.
  4. Casting technique — loading a long surf rod, controlling the line and placing a bait in the strike zone rather than beyond it.
  5. Bait and lure choice — beach worms, pipis, pilchards, metal slugs and stickbaits.

Species guides

Each guide covers habitat, season, bait, likely size range and legal considerations you should confirm with your state fisheries authority before keeping a fish.

Destinations by state

Location write-ups grouped by state, with access notes, typical species and the conditions that suit each spot. Sydney beaches and the surrounding Central Coast and Illawarra sections are the most detailed, with growing coverage of Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland and Tasmania.

Safety and conservation

Rock ledges, flooded rips and remote four-wheel-drive tracks all deserve respect. We cover life jackets and cleats, checking swell forecasts, never fishing alone at night, and telling someone your plan. On the conservation side we look at size and bag limits, releasing fish well, handling sharks and rays carefully, taking rubbish and old line home, and protecting shorebird nesting areas above the high-tide mark.
